Doctor Mirabilis is the songwriting moniker of John Tully, whose genre-defying work has evolved from the roots-tinged output of his early years as ‘JT Songs’ into a distinctive blend of literary songwriting and shapeshifting musical styles. Early champion David Berman of Silver Jews compared Tully’s work to Richard Thompson and Roland S. Howard, leading to support slots on Silver Jews’ tours in Ireland and the United States. Returning to the stage after several years away, Doctor Mirabilis presents material from his recent album 'Beach Songs', alongside selections from an eclectic catalogue spanning over two decades.
Support comes from Jon Hughes and R.L. Hughes. Jon Hughes is an American-born songwriter based in Cork, Ireland. His music blends the rootsy intimacy of early Wilco with melodic complexity of Elliott Smith, while his rich, complex storytelling evokes Richmond Fontaine and Bill Callahan. Singer, pianist, and member of now-defunct Sci-Fi Prog-Folk Band The Mechanisms, R.L. Hughes is now going solo in Nottingham with her jazzy, soulful music.
