King of cool

I’ve followed Howe Gelb and Giant Sand for many years now and seen them in Amsterdam as well as my home town Leeds and Manchester. He stopped coming to the UK after Brexit which is understandable but I’m a single parent and carer for my autistic child so booking a trip to Europe always proved too costly. So when I learned he was returning to the UK I booked two tickets for Manchester. I took my new girlfriend along with me who was new to Giant Sand. I explained that Howe is a maverick of cool who never does things the same way twice so she was ready to be surprised. The venue was intimate and cool, the sound was perfect and the bar staff were cool and friendly. Howes stripped back band were lose enough to get comfortable with but tight enough to support you if you were to fall. Tommy Larkins knew how to ride the Giant Sand waves on drums and the multi talented Brian Lopez had amazing bass grooves. Mr Gelb was playing an old SG guitar that he appeared to have formed a bond with able to pull out his quiet eerie alt country and vampire blues but quickly conjure up a storm of distorted punk rock. His relationship with his band was friendly, fun and contagious and it was clear their was a lot of love on stage when his daughter Talulha joined them to sing. Her lush singing voice mixed with her father’s Uber cool ultra low voice put us into their unique family musical atmosphere. Howe Gelb proved to be an excellent and exciting guitarist with his quirky eccentric eclectic style. I was lucky enough to meet my musical idol and two pints of cola made me hyper and splutter some embarrassing words. An amazing night thanks Giant Sand.
