Big Special, Strange Brew, Bristol - 12th May 2024
Big Special have emerged as one of the most vital and uncompromising new voices in British music. Formed by Joe Hicklin and Callum Moloney, the Black Country duo fuse spoken-word intensity, post-punk urgency, industrial grit and soul-stirring melody into songs that are as cathartic as they are confrontational. Their breakthrough single "Shithouse" announced a band unafraid to tackle life's frustrations, inequalities and absurdities head-on, combining razor-sharp observation with a raw emotional honesty that immediately set them apart.
Since then, Big Special's rise has been remarkable. Their acclaimed debut album Postindustrial Hometown Blues stormed into the UK Top 40, earning widespread praise for its powerful storytelling, unflinching social commentary and thunderous live energy. What began in intimate venues quickly escalated into sold-out headline shows, major festival appearances and tours alongside artists including Pixies, Placebo, Sleaford Mods and John Grant. Yet despite their rapid ascent, the heart of Big Special remains unchanged: two lifelong friends united by a shared vision, relentless work ethic and belief in the transformative power of music. Fierce, funny, furious and deeply human, Big Special continue to prove why they are one of the most exciting and essential bands to emerge from the UK in recent years.
