Brian Jackson is one of the most influential figures in conscious soul, the keyboardist, flautist and composer who formed one half of the legendary partnership with Gil Scott-Heron. Beginning his professional career at 18, he had recorded nine albums by the age of 27, including their very first with the jazz greats Ron Carter, Bernard Purdie and Hubert Laws. Together, Scott-Heron and Jackson wrote songs steeped in the social and political climate of their time, drawing on jazz, blues and soul to create music with a message. Their catalogue has echoed through the decades, sampled and celebrated by artists from Tupac and Common to Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and The New Yorker has called Jackson "a musical pioneer".

His own recent work has earned wide acclaim, from the solo album This Is Brian Jackson (2022) to Of Corners and Bridges (2025), a heartfelt tribute to Milton Nascimento recorded in Brazil. Across his career he has collaborated with the likes of Roy Ayers, Gregory Porter, Christian McBride and Bobbi Humphrey. Live, he plays the iconic Scott-Heron and Jackson songs — among them "Winter in America", "We Almost Lost Detroit" and "The Bottle" — while sharing warm, vivid stories about how those classics came to be.
