Formal Sppeedwear are a three-piece art-rock and new-wave band from Stoke-on-Trent, made up of Beck Clewlow, Charlie Ball and Connor Wells. Their sound leans into early-’80s synth-pop, post-punk and experimental electronics, channelling the pulsing rhythms of Neu and the angular eccentricity of DEVO. Their self-titled debut EP Formal Sppeedwear arrived in (2024), introducing a blend of motorik grooves, warped synths and wry, deadpan vocals. Further releases such as “Wait (Hatchet Gets a New Hide)” (2025) have continued to push their sound into stranger, bolder territory.
On stage, the trio translate their tightly wound recordings into a kinetic live experience, marked by bubbling basslines, sharp percussion and shimmering guitar motifs. A 2025 performance at The Windmill, Brixton highlighted their ability to turn art-rock ideas into an energised, communal show — a reminder that their blend of retro influences and modern experimentation is built for both the dancefloor and the underground. Their growing reputation has positioned them as one of the UK’s most intriguing new-wave revivalists with a distinctly playful edge.
