First time to see them and first time at this venue

Brilliant performance with Martin’s vocals spot on. Great set list too. Very impressed with the venue too but it needs more advertising to keep attracting bands of this calibre

Haunted By Gene

I've always loved Gene, but this was the first time I've seen them live and I was blown away. Martin Rossiter is a likeable & entertaining frontman - pulling rock-star shapes (the Morrissey-esque mannerisms are naturally front & centre) but undercutting himself with wit & self-deprecation. His voice is still amazing and the slower torch-songs in the set become increasingly affecting. The band played up a storm: having the legendary Mick Talbot on keys must surely raise everbody's game. I feel blessed to have seen them on this form in this intimate setting. They were loving every minute & so were the audience. Support Edie Bens was excellent too - emotionally raw country-folk songs sung beautifully. A great night.

GENE, The Brook, Southampton - 26th June 2026

Gene exploded onto the scene in 1993, driven by Martin Rossiter’s literate, emotive vocals and Steve Mason’s evocative guitar, supported by Kevin Miles (bass) and Matt James (drums). Their debut Olympian (March 1995) swiftly earned Britpop acclaim—entering the UK Albums Chart at number eight and going silver—anchored by the poignant title track. They followed up with Drawn to the Deep End (1997), a widescreen, strings-soaked statement, and Revelations (1999), where their sound deepened and darkened amid political rumination. Their final album Libertine (October 2001) arrived on their own label, showcasing newfound artistic freedom with soul-tinted piano and reflective lyricism.

Now hinting at long-whispered returns and confirmed reunion shows in Leeds and London in autumn 2025, Gene are stirring Britpop’s embers once again. They may have split in 2004, but with ten Top 40 hits, festival highlights across Europe (including Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds), and a catalogue still revered, their legacy burns as brightly as ever—ready to hit the stage and remind everyone why they mattered.
