Proper Monday Night Gig

Manchester has proven to be a great city for live music. Gorilla is a perfect small venue that holds about 500 people. Lonelady took the stage about 8. Her set was well received by fellow locals (as well as Peter Buck watching stage right). Luke Haines and Peter Buck took the stage about 9 with a keyboard player, bass player, and drummer. The music was fun, loose, and raw. Nothing felt scripted. All of the songs (apart from one new one) were taken from the 2 albums they created over the past few years. I have seen Peter Buck play on other side projects. He is a really humble guy who loves music and would play anywhere with anyone. He looks so content when he is on stage, a feeling which certainly shinnes through in his fluid and polished guitar playing. I used to go to a lot of gigs like this back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. What better way could there possibly be to spend a Monday night?

Legend of a Lyricist

I've not seen Luke Haines for over 20 years and it was such a treat to hear his songs live again. Not just the songs, but the banter, a bit of reading from one of his books, and a ton of wickedly incisive and topical wit. An absolute songwriting legend.

An Evening With Luke Haines, PowerHaus, London - 12th October 2017

Luke Haines is a British singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the frontman of the influential indie rock band The Auteurs. With a career spanning over three decades, Haines has carved out a niche for himself as a provocateur and storyteller, blending sharp wit with a dark, often satirical view of contemporary life.

Born in London, Haines began his musical career in the late '80s before forming The Auteurs in 1991. The band's early work, notably their debut album New Wave (1993), gained critical acclaim for its angular guitar-driven sound and introspective lyrics. With its mix of wry commentary on pop culture and existential musings, New Wave helped define a particular strand of British indie rock in the early '90s.

Haines' solo career continued in much the same vein, marked by projects like Baader Meinhof (2004), which delved into the themes of post-punk, as well as his solo albums that explored a variety of musical styles, from indie rock to glam and experimental pop. He is also known for his eclectic and sometimes controversial lyricism, tackling subjects ranging from politics to the art world with his trademark sardonic tone.

In addition to his solo work and The Auteurs, Haines has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and projects, including Black Box Recorder, a band that became known for its blend of indie pop and dark, narrative-driven lyrics.

Haines' influence stretches across the alternative rock landscape, admired for his ability to craft narratives that are both poignant and biting. His work has had a lasting impact on the British indie scene, and he remains a prominent figure in the world of thoughtful, genre-defying music.
