Maruja are one of the most exhilarating and uncompromising new bands to emerge from the UK underground, fusing post-punk, free jazz, hip-hop, psychedelia and experimental rock into a sound that defies easy categorisation.
Built around the unbreakable friendship of Matt Buonaccorsi, Joe Carroll, Jacob Hayes and Harry Wilkinson, the Manchester-based quartet have earned a formidable reputation for creating music that is as thought-provoking as it is visceral. Their songs combine powerful social commentary with explosive musicianship, weaving together relentless breakbeats, hypnotic basslines, searing guitar loops, transcendent saxophone passages and impassioned spoken-word vocals. Rooted in themes of protest, spirituality and human connection, Maruja's music channels raw emotion and restless energy into something genuinely transformative, drawing comparisons to boundary-pushing acts such as Black Country, New Road, black midi and Squid while carving out a distinct identity entirely their own.
