Scientist (born Hopeton Overton Brown on April 18, 1960, in Kingston, Jamaica) is a pioneering dub music producer and engineer whose innovative techniques revolutionised the genre in the 1980s. Mentored by the legendary King Tubby, Scientist began his career as a teenager, working at Tubby's Dromilly Road studio. His technical prowess earned him the nickname "Scientist" after Tubby remarked on his exceptional skills. Scientist's early work involved modifying amplifiers and experimenting with sound, laying the foundation for his future contributions to dub music.

In the late 1970s, Scientist became the principal engineer at Channel One studio, where he had access to a 16-track mixing desk, a significant upgrade from the four-track setup at Tubby's studio. This advancement allowed him to push the boundaries of dub production, creating more complex and layered mixes. Throughout the 1980s, Scientist released a series of influential albums, including Scientist Meets the Space Invaders (1981), Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires (1981), and Scientist Wins the World Cup (1982), all of which showcased his unique approach to dub music. His collaborations with the Roots Radics band and other artists further cemented his status as a leading figure in the genre.
