The Mary Wallopers, Roadmender Northampton, Northampton - 24th November 2023
The Mary Wallopers are a raucous folk group from Dundalk, Ireland, known for their high-energy reinterpretations of traditional Irish ballads and rebel songs. Formed by brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy alongside Sean McKenna, the band originally gained traction through intimate live-streamed performances before breaking onto the live circuit with their rowdy, beer-soaked gigs. Their self-titled debut album The Mary Wallopers (2022) showcased their ability to blend the raw spirit of punk with the storytelling traditions of Irish folk, featuring tracks like "Cod Liver Oil & The Orange Juice" and "The Frost Is All Over."
The band have made their mark on the UK festival scene, playing major events like Glastonbury, Green Man, and Cambridge Folk Festival, where their infectious energy and rousing choruses have won over crowds. Their live shows are a whirlwind of boisterous singalongs, foot-stomping rhythms, and sharp-witted banter, capturing the rebellious spirit of the folk tradition. With a growing following and a reputation for wild, unforgettable performances, The Mary Wallopers continue to bring Irish folk music to new audiences with humour, heart, and an unshakable DIY ethos.
