The Mountain Goats are long-standing pioneers of the indie folk and indie rock world, led by the singular songwriting voice of John Darnielle. Formed in 1991, the project began as a lo-fi, home-recorded solo endeavour — Darnielle armed with an acoustic guitar and a tape recorder — before gradually evolving into a full band featuring Peter Hughes (bass), Jon Wurster (drums) and Matt Douglas (multi-instrumentalist). Their music blends sharp, literary lyricism with unflinching emotional honesty, creating songs that read like short stories while retaining the immediacy of folk and punk traditions.
Over more than three decades, The Mountain Goats have built one of the most admired catalogues in independent music, releasing 22 studio albums that traverse themes of faith, endurance, love and survival. From early cult favourites like All Hail West Texas (2002) and The Sunset Tree (2005) to later, more expansive works such as In League with Dragons (2019) and Jenny from Thebes (2023), the band have continually reinvented their sound without losing their narrative heart.
