VOWWS are an Australian-born, Los Angeles-based darkwave duo known for their cinematic blend of post-punk, industrial, and electronic music. Comprised of Matt James and Rizz, the band crafts a brooding, atmospheric sound that draws influences from artists like Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Bauhaus, while incorporating elements of pop and experimental rock. Their music is often described as "death pop," a term they embrace for its fusion of melancholic tones with infectious melodies.
Since their debut album The Great Sun (2015), which featured collaborations with Gary Numan and was co-produced by Kevin McMahon (Swans, The Walkmen), VOWWS have continued to refine their sound. Their follow-up, Under the World (2018), solidified their place in the darkwave and industrial scenes, with tracks like “Structure of Love” and “ESSEFF” earning widespread acclaim. Known for their striking aesthetic and intense live performances, the duo has supported acts such as Deftones, Poppy, and The Cult, bringing their hypnotic, immersive sound to audiences across the UK, Europe, and North America.
