Yasiin Bey, the Brooklyn-born artist formerly known as Mos Def, is one of hip-hop's most influential and intellectually restless voices. He first made his mark as one half of Black Star alongside Talib Kweli, whose acclaimed 1998 debut Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star became a cornerstone of conscious rap. He followed it with his solo debut Black on Both Sides (1999), a record celebrated for its live instrumentation, poetic lyricism and sharp social commentary, cementing his reputation as a virtuoso MC.

Bey's talents reach far beyond music. A respected screen actor, he earned widespread praise for his portrayal of pioneering surgical technician Vivien Thomas in the HBO film Something the Lord Made, and brought warmth and humour to Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind opposite Jack Black. Throughout his career he has remained an outspoken advocate for social justice, using his platform to confront systemic oppression and injustice. Equal parts poet, performer and provocateur, he remains a singular figure whose work continues to resonate across generations.
