African Head Charge are an experimental collective formed in London by percussionist and producer Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, known for pushing the boundaries between dub, post-punk, industrial and African-influenced rhythms. Emerging from the UK’s early-’80s underground, the project became closely associated with Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound label, developing a sound defined by heavy bass, ritualistic percussion, tape manipulation and radical studio experimentation. Their music often feels hypnotic and confrontational, blending political consciousness with a deep sense of spiritual and rhythmic exploration.
Across albums such as My Life in a Hole in the Ground (1981), Off the Beaten Track (1986), Songs of Praise (1990), Vision of a Psychedelic Africa (2005) and A Trip to Bolgatanga (2023), African Head Charge have continually reinvented their approach while remaining rooted in dub’s transformative power. Their live performances are immersive and unpredictable, drawing on improvisation, layered rhythms and communal energy. With a legacy that has influenced generations of experimental, electronic and alternative artists, African Head Charge remain a singular and enduring force in boundary-pushing music.
