Who knew that scientists can be humourous and engaging!
I decided to attend this event at the last minute. It was about DNA so I thought, but it was more than that. I took away from this fun, personal and engaging conversation between two great men - an historian and a scientist confirmation that we are all part of the one big geno pool. It is politics and societal differences and lazy thinking that stop us from seeing the biological thread we are all linked to. I knew nothing about Adam Rutherford and what I experienced is someone who is knowledgeable, passionate and keen to share his personal story and stories regarding his work. I would happily sit in one of his lectures and learn about how fascinating the world of geno-science (my term) is and what it has and is doing for the wellbeing and furtherance of the human condition and what our biology reveals to us and for the future generations. My only quibble was about the testing of DNA for genealogical purposes. Adam Rutherford was scathing about it and in some respects for good reason. However, for those who cannot trace their ancestry as they were enslaved, adopted etc., their need for an answer, clues to knowing where they fit in or links to an unlikely past is because others have documented or oral history to rely on. I have been directed by the author to read the book and discover more about the topic. Indeed I will! Thanks for this event, I look forward to more like this. It was truly a great evening in a wonderful venue.

Adam Rutherford meets David Olusoga: The History in our DNA, Union Chapel, London - 20th July 2026
David Olusoga is a British historian, broadcaster, and author, renowned for his work exploring themes of empire, race, and social history. Born in Nigeria and raised in the UK, Olusoga has become one of the leading voices in bringing forgotten histories to light, particularly regarding Black British history and the legacies of colonialism.
He is best known for his award-winning books, including Black and British: A Forgotten History (2016) and The World’s War: Forgotten Soldiers of Empire (2014), as well as his critically acclaimed television series, such as A House Through Time, Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners, and Black and British: A Forgotten History. A passionate and engaging speaker, Olusoga continues to challenge mainstream historical narratives, making complex and often overlooked histories accessible to a wide audience.
