jackzebra is a brave, introspective voice who’s emerged as a leader in China’s growing cloud rap movement. The Chengdu-based artist’s airy, Auto-Tuned delivery, performed exclusively in Mandarin, has amassed online fans across the globe with its plugg-inspired roots and crossover. Jack co-founded the online collective 626Company with artists 1kpbs and ricky_118 in 2019, and has since released over a dozen projects. His sound has been called 实感音乐 (shígǎn music), or “experi-motional music,” with themes like mental health, socio-economic anxiety, and his generation’s future at the fore.
Born Zhang Zeng Kai in Shanghai, China, jackzebra has been described by Pitchfork as the ever-relatable, young voice “speaking to the ennui of China’s urban youth.” Influenced by artists like M.I.A., A$AP Rocky, Lil B, Yung Lean, Drain Gang, and Black Kray, he developed his sound through China’s underground online music community.
In 2023, jack1888 mixtape and jackprblmtape garnered attention from outlets like Bandcamp, while a prolific run of releases throughout 2024—including 王中王 (King of Kings)—cemented his upward trajectory. With the recent release of Above & Beyond, a 34-track tape written during a visit to the States, and forthcoming releases with SURF GANG, 2025 promises to be jackzebra’s biggest year yet.
