I had never heard of Martin Simpson before booking my tickets. I was very impressed with his performance, I would give his playing 5 out of 5 and his singing 4 out of 5. In my opinion, he chatted too much in the first half of the programme.

Martin Simpson is one of Britain’s foremost acoustic guitarists and folk singers, renowned for his virtuosic slide playing and deeply emotive interpretations of traditional music. Since releasing his debut Golden Vanity in 1976 and touring with Steeleye Span, Simpson has built a remarkable four-decade career, blending British, American and Irish folk with blues and Americana. His acclaimed albums—such as Rooted (2019) and Prodigal Son (2007)—have earned widespread praise, with Prodigal Son winning Best Album and “Never Any Good” named Best Original Song at the 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Simpson’s live performances are treasured for their warmth, technical brilliance and storytelling power. He holds the record for the most nominations in BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards history, including 13 for Musician of the Year—an honour he has won twice. A familiar face on the UK folk circuit, he has played major festivals like Cambridge Folk Festival and Sidmouth Folk Week, and appeared at landmark venues including the Royal Albert Hall. Still actively touring and releasing music—most recently Skydancers—Simpson continues to inspire with his heartfelt and masterful musicianship.
