Marvellous Mavis
The legend that is Mavis Staples keeps giving. Her personality engages the audience and with that voice produces a great evening. Mavis has a super band lead by the exceptional guitarist Rick Holmstrom. Mavis gave us 70 minutes of soulful blues with 7 songs from the Staples Singers in her set.

Good to hear more Staples Singers material than is usual, she did a resume of her whole career. Less talking and more singing was welcome. Her band who have been with her for a long time were very tight and the sound was excellent. Shame there wasn’t an encore (The Weight) but she was entitled to be exhausted. All in all a great evening in one of London’s better venues

Mavis Staples is a Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer; a civil rights icon; a Grammy Award-winner; a chart-topping soul/gospel/R&B pioneer; a National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient; and a Kennedy Center honoree.
She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, and sang in Barack Obama’s White House. She’s collaborated with everyone from Prince and Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire and Hozier.
