Mary Coughlan, Union Chapel, London - 15th April 2025
It was a night of firsts. I had never been to the Union Chapel venue in Islington. And I had never seen Mary Coughlan before. The Union Chapel is only a ten minute walk from Islington and Highbury station. And being a church it is a magnificent structure and the acoustics are edcellent. I will be booking to see other artists at this venue. Note: There is a bar upstais but you are not allowed to bring alcohol through into the chapel itself. They sell soft drinks and water. You can take an empty water bottle in with you. So to the show. First up were Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham from Nine Below Zero. Playing an acoustic show, with nods to their history, that was excellent. Next was Ultan Conlon. Only three songs but he was coming back later to sing with Mary. It has taken me years to get to see Mary Coughlan live. And what a treat. Songs I semi knew, and songs I didn't know at all. It didn't matter, they all seemed like old friends, including the songs from Mary's new album. All linked together with Irish charm and wit. I had intended to go and see Mary in Glasgow as part of the Celtic Connections shows in January, but other things got in the way. so when the London shows came up, I was determined to be there. I am so pleased I made the effort. A superb night out.

Mary Coughlan is probably Ireland's greatest blues/jazz singer. The evening was fun and she was backed up with an excellent quartet plus Ultan Conlon for a few numbers. Her singing is simply effortless and the evening was enhanced by the venue itself. The Union Chapel has wonderful acoustics and an intimate atmosphere. I loved it.
